European countries Denmark and Ireland were declared as the second and third most peaceful countries respectively. Denmark was third last year while Ireland was at second place. New Zealand was ranked fourth with 2 levels of improvement while Austria was declared as the 5th peaceful country with a drop of one level. Singapore was the most peaceful country in Asia and ranked 6th in the global ranking. Portugal 7th, Slovenia 8th, Japan 9th and Switzerland 10th.
Europe has been the most peaceful region in the world, but the situation is worsening due to the war in Ukraine. Afghanistan has been ranked last for the 8th year in a row, i.e. 163rd, followed by Yemen (162), Syria (161). , South Sudan (160) and Congo (159). This year’s list saw significant declines for Russia and Ukraine, coming in at 158 and 157 respectively.
