LAHORE – Quitting the leadership of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Dr Tahirul Qadri has announced names of central and provincial office bearers of the party.
Speaking at General Council meeting of PAT and briefing the media on Sunday, he said that he would take the final decision regarding participation in polls or not in the light of referendum to be carried out at union council level across the country.
Dr Tahirul Qadri said that the PAT had been reorganized and now the scope would be extended to the grass root level. Dr Raheeq Abbasi and Khurram Nawaz Gandapur would be new President and Secretary General, respectively, he announced. He said that the General Council had authorised him to take the final decision about contesting next elections. He said that the PAT would carry out referendum from Monday to Wednesday during which 500 voters would be involved in every union council.
He said that the referendum results would be submitted to the central secretariat of PAT till coming Thursday and would take the final decision at appropriate time. He said that every worker has been tasked to give party membership to at least 200 persons. He claimed to have saved the constitution and democracy on January 17 by calling off long march on time otherwise martial law was inevitable.
He said elections were the only solution to save Pakistan from sinking further but these should be held after reforming current Election Commission (EC). He warned that holding elections without reforming EC meant rigging which he would not allow at any cost. He said that he was fighting this war for the rights of common man of the country.
“Demanding implementation of constitutional clauses is the basic responsibility of every citizen,” Qadri added. He said that many political leaders were feeling the heat over his demands as they feel they would be disqualified if those were implemented. He said that he supported such a democracy in which betterment of common man was preferred.
Terming his long march starting point of revolution, Qadri vowed that he would go to every nook and corner of the country as part of struggle against corruption and to protect the rights of the masses. He said the country would start moving towards right direction if his demands were implemented in letter and spirit.
